An evolution of the Skull of My Enemy Mug, each Memento Mori Mug starts the same way as between 1.5 and 2 pounds of clay that is thrown on the potter’s wheel into the general skull shape. The form is manipulated while it is still soft into the skull face. Once the shape has set up, it is transformed into a sugar skull with hand carved designs and into a mug with the addition of a bone-shaped handle. Next, “Memento Mori” is scribed on the back with a rose or two, and it is signed/dated (year) by yours truly. Colors (purple, green, turquoise, peacock, blue and red) are painted on by hand before the first firing, and then the piece is washed in black to bring out the carved lines. A clear glaze is applied to the whole thing, and it is fired to 2200 degrees F in the final firing.
The result is a fully functional, totally unique sugar skull mug that holds between 10 and 12 ounces. It is microwave and dishwasher safe!
